Madonna and Child

Cannareggio, Venice

Outdoor sculptures of the Madonna and Child are very common in Italy but many seem, if not gone, apparently forgotten. That is why we were surprised to see this one dramatically illuminated at the corner of two obscure calles in a residential neighborhood in Venice.

In the sculpture the child grasps his mother's veil, one of the tropes originally derived from the Byzantine Pelagonitissa genre.
